Student Leadership at Rotokauri School

At Rotokauri School, student leadership roles, such as Student Council, Peer Mediators and House Captains, provide valuable opportunities for students to develop their leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, and make a positive impact on the school community.

Peer Mediators

The Peer Mediators at Rotokauri School are a dedicated group of student leaders who are committed to promoting conflict resolution, positive communication, and a safe and inclusive school community. Trained to help their peers resolve conflicts peacefully and respectfully, the Peer Mediators are a valuable resource for students who may be experiencing difficulties with their classmates. Led by a team of experienced teachers, the Peer Mediators program promotes important social and emotional skills, and helps to foster a culture of kindness, respect, and understanding at our school.

Student Council

Rotokauri School encourages leadership skills. We have an elected Student Council. These students represent the student body and promote student voice within our school. All of our senior students gain confidence through their involvement in the organisation of many school activities. The buddy system partners senior students with junior students to provide a caring support network. Our Peer Mediation programme allows our senior students to play a role in setting the tone of our school. Our senior students are involved in a series of challenges to promote leadership skills: Leadership Camp and a climb up a mountain every term. Our senior students leave our school with confidence in their own abilities and are ready to face new challenges at Secondary School.

House Captains

The House Captains at Rotokauri School are a group of student leaders who are responsible for leading and motivating their respective house teams throughout the year. Comprised of senior students who have demonstrated strong leadership skills, the House Captains play an important role in promoting healthy competition, teamwork, and school spirit. They lead their teams in a variety of events and activities, such as sports competitions, academic challenges, and community service projects. They also act as role models for younger students, inspiring them to develop their own leadership skills and become active participants in the school community.

Enviro Group

At Rotokauri School our aim is that through exploration, discovery and connections with the environment, students experience how to make decisions and take action to improve the physical and social environment of our places, our community and our world. The Enviro Group at Rotokauri School is a dedicated team of students and teachers,  who are committed to promoting environmental sustainability and creating a greener future for our school and community.

Cultural Ambassadors

At Rotokauri School, our Cultural Ambassadors play an important role in celebrating and promoting the rich diversity within our school community. These student leaders help to foster understanding, respect, and inclusion by supporting cultural events, sharing traditions, and encouraging others to embrace different cultures. Through their leadership, our Cultural Ambassadors help create a welcoming environment where all ākonga feel seen, valued, and proud of their identity.

Big Buddies

At Rotokauri School, the Big Buddy Programme is a valued initiative that fosters tuakana-teina relationships, where older students are paired with younger peers to provide guidance, friendship, and support. Through regular activities and shared experiences, our Big Buddies act as positive role models, helping younger students feel welcomed, connected, and confident within the school environment. This programme builds leadership, empathy, and a strong sense of community, creating meaningful connections across year levels.
